Olivier-Hugues Terreault
When you meet Olivier-Hugues Terreault, one of the founders of the Dr. Clown Foundation, you immediately sense it — this man has made laughter his life’s work. But his laughter isn’t the loud, showy kind that fills a theatre. It’s quieter, more intentional — the kind that heals.
Olivier began his clowning journey in Quebec over 30 years ago, working alongside Jean Saucier, founder of the Zani Clown and Comedy School. Together, they helped plant the first seeds of Dr. Clown, an organization that would change how we think about clowning—from circus spectacle to a form of social connection and compassion.
“The clown,” Olivier says, “is not just someone who performs. It’s someone who meets the other — with openness, curiosity, and heart.”
Today, Olivier lives in Montpellier in the South of France and teaches around the world. He has dedicated his career to developing the language of relational clowning — a practice that combines play, empathy, and presence to create genuine human encounters, often in healthcare settings or with people experiencing vulnerability.
In his words, the clown is “an archetype of resilience” — someone who fails, falls, and still gets back up with joy and wonder. Through this spirit, Olivier believes, we reconnect to our own resilience and capacity for healing.
